Does MCC provide housing and transportation?
You are responsible for finding your own housing. MCC has resources to help you find suitable housing. Members often rent an apartment together. We provide transportation to and from the MCC worksite. You’ll need to get to the MCC office or other meeting place on your own.

Is there a normal work schedule?
Flexibility is essential as your schedule will fluctuate to meet the needs of our sponsors. For much of the season, you’ll be camping at frontcountry or backcountry locations, but you may also have weeks in town. We often work well over 40 hours per week and on Saturdays. Hitches may be 9 or more days long, up to 12 weeks in remote locations.

Is the AmeriCorps stipend enough to live on?
The stipend is adequate to meet your basic needs for housing, food, and routine needs. However, you will find it difficult to keep up with car loan payments or other debts, such as credit card bills. School loans may be put in loan forbearance during your AmeriCorps term of service.

How long will my term of service be?
Field Crew Leaders typically serve from February to November, a minimum of 1700 hours. Corpsmembers will serve a minimum of 900 hours from May to October. The Montana YES Crew Leaders will serve a minimum of 900 hours but their term of service runs from April to August. You must commit to the entire length of the service, not just the minimum number of hours, to earn your education award from AmeriCorps.

What type of work will I be doing?
MCC service projects are diverse. Throughout the summer you may do one or all of the following: historical building restoration, trail building, fencing, trail maintenance, fire restoration, revegetation, habitat enhancement and community projects.

Who does the MCC work with?
MCC crews work with over 150 project sponsor agencies, including the National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, BLM, Fish and Wildlife Service, the Montana state agencies for Fish, Wildlife, and Parks, Natural Resources and Conservation, and Environmental Quality, numerous city and county agencies, and community organizations.

I’ve never done anything like this before, what type of training will I receive?
The MCC trains all Leaders and Members. During the term of service, Crew Leaders and Corpsmembers will complete the following trainings and workshops: Wilderness Advanced First Aid, Conflict Resolution, Backcountry Foundations including Leave No Trace, Educational Skills, Chain-saw, Communication Skills, Trail Maintenance, Supervisory and Leadership Skills.

Do I need special gear?
You’ll need sturdy work boots and work gloves. The work boots need to be full leather, seven inches high, with a heavy lug sole. Investing in a good pair of boots will save you in the end. MCC provides a uniform shirt, safety equipment, group camping gear, and transportation from our base. Most members bring their own backpack and sleeping bag, but we can help with these and some other items if needed.
